Livan Extended Through 2011
When I read the news that Livan Hernandez signed an extension with the Nationals my initial reaction was "I can't believe the Nats are going to overpay Livan for what he's done this year". However, I then saw that it is just one year deal at $1 million plus incentives. Livan Hernandez has certainly been a benefactor of some luck this year, but even if he produces as he did in 2008 and 2009 (or even a little worse), he's still a bargain. He put up 1.7 WAR last year and 1.4 the year before which equated to $14.1 million. Livan won't put up the close to 3 WAR he's on pace for this year, but he obviously doesn't need to in order to earn the contract. On a young team that is thin on starting pitching (even before Strasburg's injury), an innings eater like Livan is necessary. Plus, if you can put a decent/good defense behind him ( he can't strike anyone out, 4.67 K/9) Livan could give you a good amount of positive value. My initial reaction to this news couldn't be more off, an overall a great move by the Nats.
