NY-5, SF-1

Christy Mathewson 1905 World Series: 3 wins,
27 IP, 0 runs.  Top that Mr. Cain!
Even when San Francisco wins the World Series, New York still ends up on top!

All kidding aside, watching the Giants rotation and hodgepodge of a lineup just completely dominate since September has truly been a fun ride.

People have been calling this Giants team a group of "castaways and misfits" and I want to take a look into that definition:

castaway [ˈkɑːstəˌweɪ]
n
1. a person who has been shipwrecked
2. something thrown off or away; castoff

Jose Guillen, Cody Ross, and Pat Burrell were all taken off of waivers, essentially thrown off of their former teams.  Andres Torres was a minor league free agent.  Aubrey Huff was their second choice for 1b.  I get it, nobody wanted these "castaways".

misfit
n [ˈmɪsˌfɪt]
1. a person not suited in behaviour or attitude to a particular social environment
2. something that does not fit or fits badly

Not sure I agree here.  You can currently call the Giants castaways because they were castoff from other teams.  But, you can't currently call them misfits, because winning a World Series kind of proves that they do fit, right?

I find it interesting that the team of "castaways" also has potential future castaways   The Giants still owe Aaron Rowand $24M and Barry Zito $57.5M, if/when they are released/picked up off waivers, will they be playing in a World Series?

  1. I am impressed to high heaven at any team that can generate offense with a lineup of Huff, Burrell (off waivers!), Cody Ross, Rowand, Juan Uribe, Freddy Sanchez, and the decaying corpse of Edgar Renteria. I tip my hat to Sabean.

  2. That the Giants shut down the Rangers lineup is not a surprise. That they hit the Rangers pitching is pretty much unfathomable.

Separated from each other all of these players can't hit or even field with Sanchez being the exception. But collectively they "pick each other up" or "have a knack for getting the big hit"/sarcasm. In sum, if Sabean thinks that this is a repeatable skill, or a skill at all and he retains this lineup, the Giants are in trouble.
